Friends of Yates

Description
Friends of Yates
Serving as creative director, this was a passion project for me. The existing site was extremely outdated, hard to update, not visually appealing, and full of technical errors. My rebranding and redesign breathed new life into the site, while paying respect to the century-long tradition and history of Friends of Yates, the oldest women’s shelter (and first for women of color) in Kansas City.
- Technical Development: Built and optimized the site using WordPress, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and PHP.
- UI/UX Design: The focus was to brighten the site and brand up, hence the use of yellow as a primary color, with a royal blue as the secondary color. It needed to be easy to use for non-tech savvy users, and provide a quick exit button for discretion.
- Features/Plugins: Divi builder was used as the page builder to make updating easier to maintain, additionally I added a history section after several talks with the president of FOY, and seeing her passion for the organization's history. Something I personally researched and sourced imagery for- some of which had not been seen by the president before.
- Collaboration & Strategy: I worked very closely with then president LaDora Lattimore to honor the history of FOY, provide a beautiful new site, and allow for easy updating and scalability in the future.
While every project is important, some call to you more deeply. This was one of those projects. It was deeply meaningful to me and for my work, I was honored at an annual city-wide function held by Friends of Yates- and given the Mayor Tyrone Garner and Commissioner Thomas Burroughs Exemplary Service Award.
